In 2360, posted as impulse engineering specialist to U.S.S. Deneva, 2360. Promoted to lieutenant junior grade and named chief of impulse propulsion systems in 2362. Critically wounded in line of duty in  early 2364. Reassigned to Barisa Prime for long-term medical treatment. Took family leave of absence 2365-67, while residing  on Barisa Prime. Returned to duty in mid-2367. Posted to U.S.S. Sutherland as junior warp core supervisor. Promoted to lieutenant and named warp core supervisor in 2369.
In 2371,  assigned as assistant chief engineer on U.S.S. Voyager.  Presumed lost on Voyager's first mission to the Badlands to pursue a Maquis vessel,  when Starfleet lost contact with ship on stardate 48307.5.  Voyager was actually swept to the Delta Quadrant by  alien technology;  recently, contact was briefly re-established with the ship, providing the following information. 
Carey briefly promoted to chief engineer shortly after arrival in Delta Quadrant and death of superior officer.  Was demoted and replaced by B'Elanna Torres  after stardate 48439.   After stardate 48642.5, Carey and  several other crew members participated in a clandestine exchange, against the Captain's direct orders and the Prime Directive,  with the citizens of the planet Sikaris .  Federation cultural material was traded for trajector technology that theoretically could return Voyager quickly to the Alpha Quadrant.  The technology turned out to be incompatible with Voyager's systems.  On stardate 48658.2, Carey went on an away mission to a Class-M planet to retrieve edible fruits and vegetables.  When the Voyager shortly thereafter answered a distress call from a disabled Kazon-Nistrim ship, Carey proposed a method by which an away party could beam to the ship amid deadly radiation. When this radiation turned out to be the result of Federation technology, Carey was briefly suspected of having violated the Prime Directive to give it to the Kazon. He was cleared of this charge when the perpetrator turned out to be Maquis crewwoman Seska.
